Linksom of rechtsom?

Iedereen die geregeld naar de Simpsons kijkt weet dat water in Australië andersom de afvoer indraait dan in Amerika. Dit omdat de VS en Australië op verschillende halfronden liggen Je kunt dit natuurlijk direct op Internet opzoeken, maar je bent een nerd of je bent het niet. Dus naar aanleiding van een vraag van Oscar en geïnspireerd door Mythbusters trokken we op onderzoek uit in de grote boze wereld van gootstenen en wasbakken.

Als eerste een methode om te kunnen kijken welke richting het water opstroomt. Na een paar pogingen was deze methode gekozen als de beste:
-Laat het bassin vollopen met water,
-Ga even News-entries op Slashdot lezen
-Trek de stop eruit en mik direct water peper in het water zodat je kunt zien welke kant het opstroomt

Zo gezegd zo gedaan. Ons uitgangspunt was dat de vortexen bij mij de andere kant op zouden roteren dan bij Oscar, alleen wisten we niet welke kant.

Oscar: 2 verschillende gootstenen, ieder 2X getest
Marijn: 3 verschillende gootstenen, ieder 2X getest

Uitkomst: Oscar = 4X linksom, Marijn = 6X rechtsom

Nou, lijkt me duidelijk, even op internet opzoeken en jawel: "Water always drains in a clockwise direction in the Southern Hemisphere, and in a counterclockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere." even kijken... JA!, verhip, counterclockwise is linksom, mooi.

Myth Confirmed....

Nou nee, Als we even verder lezen: "This is an error that has a life of its own, and just will not die."

hmm... maar uhm, hoe is deze mythe dan in het leven gebracht? "The supposed reason for this "fact" is the Coriolis effect, which has to do with the effect of the earth's rotation on moving objects. Well, there is such a thing as the Coriolis effect. It explains why macro-events such as hurricanes rotate in a clockwise direction in the Southern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere." Oh ja, er begint iets te dagen. Goh, blijft fascinerend, dit soort dingen :)

Maargoed, waarom orkaan wel linksom en mijn gootsteen niet ? :| "When you get down to itty-bitty phenomena such as the water draining out of your bathtub, the Coriolis effect is insignificant, amounting to roughly three ten-millionths of the force of gravity" jammer.... was leuk geweest.

Maar hoe zit het dan wel? "The boring truth is that water drains every which way no matter what hemisphere you're in, for reasons which have to do mostly with the shape of the drain, the way you poured in the water in the first place, and so on." Eerst zien, dan geloven, toch? dus hup, met de peperbus naar de gootsteen gesneld om dit uit te testen. Gevuld, even met de hand linksom laten draaien, wachten totdat je "denkt" dat het niet meer beweegt. stop eruit, peper erin, en jawel, linksom. Het feit dat de vorm van de gootsteen ermee van doen zou hebben, heb ik maar voor lief aangenomen :)

Als dit zo bekent is, waarom gelooft iedereen deze mythe dan? Zijn er geen mensen geweest die dit al eerder aan het daglicht gesteld hebben? "All this was demonstrated way back in 1962 by one Ascher Shapiro, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Shapiro filled a circular tank six feet in diameter and six inches high in such a way that the water swirled in a clockwise direction. (Remember, now, that Coriolis forces in the Northern Hemisphere act in a counterclockwise direction.)
Shapiro then covered the tank with a plastic sheet, kept the temperature constant, and sat down to read comic books or whatever scientists do while they wait for their experiments to percolate. When he pulled the plug after an hour or two, the water went down the drain clockwise, presumably because it still retained some clockwise motion from filling.
On the other hand, if Shapiro pulled the plug after waiting a full 24 hours, the draining water spiraled counterclockwise, indicating that the motion from filling had subsided enough for the Coriolis effect to take over. When the plug was pulled after four to five hours, the water started draining clockwise, then gradually slowed down and finally started swirling in the opposite direction.
But I'm sure the myth of the bathtub spirals will endure. Shapiro did his work in 1962 and I proclaimed it to the world in 1983. Yet next to the mystery of where all the baby pigeons are, this remains the commonest question I get."

Dus! De kant van de aarde waar je je bevindt IS van invloed op de watervortex die zich bij de afvoer vormt. De invloed is echter zo klein dat andere invloeden zoals de vorm van het bassin en hoe het bassin gevuld wordt zullen bepalen welke kant de vortex zal stromen. Het is mogelijk om de mythe te repliceren door middel van veeeeel water, een zeer symmetrisch bassin en lang wachten, maar dit is niet iets dat iedere dag voorkomt.
